We know that making earth-conscious switches in your home and daily life can feel overwhelming. When you start to see the environmental impacts and realize just how much needs to be done - it becomes very intimidating for just one person. But the good news is you don’t have to do it alone.

The LiteFoot Foundation is committed to educating the community and spreading awareness. Did you know there are many resources (right here in Savannah!) to help you on your sustainability journey?

Today we are sharing 6 local resources to help you create an imperfect sustainable life.

COR Composting

COR Compost blue bin and a wheelbarrow full of soil

Want to start composting but don’t know where to begin? Code of Return Composting provides weekly compost pick-up for restaurants, businesses, and homeowners in the Savannah area. An estimated 50% of the trash we send to landfills is compostable. Food scraps, yard trimmings, paper, and wood scraps are all items that can be broken down to create soil instead of sitting in a landfill. For a small fee, CORE will pick up directly from your home or business each week!

Learn more about composting and sign up by visiting corcompost.com.

Repurpose Savannah

Repurpose Savannah is a women-led nonprofit with a climate-conscious deconstruction and building preservation approach. Hire this team for structure removal, consulting, and helping salvage building materials. You can even purchase some of their reclaimed materials to use in your projects.

Repurpose Savannah has contributed to some amazing projects all around town. Learn more about what these ladies are doing and how you can get involved.

Lammergeier Glass Recycling

Brighter Days

Brighter Days natural supplements and herbs

Forget Whole Foods, Brighter Days is an independently-owned natural food market located in Forsyth Park. It is the perfect place to buy organic fresh produce and other natural home products. They also have a section of their store committed to refilling. Bring your containers from home and stock up on various types of rice, beans, flour, and more.

Their website provides a wealth of resources, wellness tools, and recipes that pair nicely with their wide assortment of natural products.

Local Farm Bag

Get local organic produce delivered directly to your home. Since 2009 Local Farm Bag has partnered with suppliers all over the low country to bring you high-quality, fresh produce. They also do meat, seafood, dairy, and other pantry items at request. Support local farmers and reduce your number of trips to the grocery store. Win, Win!

These amazing companies and organizations are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to making sustainable swaps. Savannah has an amazing community of small businesses and makers. Visit your community farmer’s market or maker markets. Here are a few of our favorites:

Though not local, these two organizations are an excellent resource for living a sustainable lifestyle. Consider ForDays and Terracycle for your textile and hard-to-recycle items.

ForDays

Clothing consumption has increased 400% over the past 20 years*. Clothing collection and recycling can’t keep up. ForDays is working to create a circular economy by collecting unwanted textiles to recycle properly. You can purchase a “Take Back Bag” for just $20. Every bag diverts 15 lbs of waste from landfills.

TerraCycle

With TerraCycle’s Zero Waste box, you can recycle all those hard-to-recycle items in your home. Curbside recycling only takes very specific items and based on where you are located it can be different! The majority of city recycling programs won’t take dirty or contaminated plastic. Items like plastic bottle caps or plastic toothbrushes are too small to be recycled. That is why the TerraCycle Zero Waste boxes are so amazing! They can take contaminated or tiny plastic items and recycle them. When your box is full, you tape it up and ship it back to them free of charge.

We encourage you to try just one of the organizations listed above for the next few months. You will be surprised how empowered and excited you feel about making a sustainable change within your home.

It can feel small and insignificant when done on your own, but together we can create big change. Share your sustainable swaps on social media! Tag LiteFoot Foundation so we can cheer you on and support each other as we learn to reduce our carbon footprint together.
