Closed-Loop Aluminum Bottle Program for Savannah: Step into a Sustainable Future

We are excited to introduce our Closed-Loop Aluminum Bottle program! This innovative initiative is designed to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainability in our community. Let’s dive into the details and consider what this means for you.

What is The Aluminum Bottle Reuse Program?

The Closed-Loop Aluminum Bottle program originated from our passion for reducing plastic waste in our community. At Lite Foot we have a vision for a plastic-free future. We have seen what this could look like in the nearly 4 years that the refillery has been open. The community’s response to refilling and less plastic waste has been overwhelming. We realized there was a shared desire for sustainable solutions. Inspired by this, we decided to tackle one of the biggest sources of plastic waste: single-use water bottles.

Our program introduces a sustainable alternative by replacing single-use plastic water bottles with durable, reusable aluminum bottles designed for repeated use. Through our closed-loop system, each bottle remains within a continuous cycle of use, collection, cleaning, and repurposing, minimizing environmental impact. We are partnering with local businesses, schools, and community organizations to distribute these bottles and promote a culture of reuse. Our goal is to empower the community to make environmentally friendly choices and contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.

How does it work?

This new program will be a community effort. Lite Foot Foundation has partnered with the City of Savannah and several local businesses. These businesses will switch from selling plastic bottles to using our new aluminum bottles, that can be branded to their business. Community members will purchase these bottles of water (instead of single-use plastic!) when they are finished, they won’t be thrown away. The bottles will be collected in a unique receptacle. They then will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Aluminum bottles will then be refilled with purified filtered water and used again.

Who can use it?

Businesses and individuals alike can do their part to make this new program a success.

What kind of impact does a switch like this make?

The Closed-Loop Aluminum Bottle program is a transformative step towards sustainability and waste reduction in our community. Our primary goal is to replace 50,000 single-use plastic bottles with reusable aluminum bottles in the first year. This shift will significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in our oceans and landfills, aligning with our commitment to environmental stewardship. By decreasing the demand for single-use plastics, we aim to reduce plastic waste by approximately 1.8 tons annually.

Additionally, we plan to foster a culture of reuse and recycling through strategic partnerships with local businesses, schools, and community organizations. Our target is to engage 30 local businesses and institutions in the program within the first year, promoting sustainable practices and enhancing community involvement. We will track retention rates and increase in business participation to ensure our program's effectiveness and growth.

By creating a closed-loop system for our aluminum bottles, we are not only reducing waste but also supporting local economies through job creation in collection, cleaning, and redistribution. This holistic approach ensures that our program has a lasting positive impact on both the environment and the community. Together, we can make Savannah a leader in sustainability and create a cleaner, healthier planet for future generations.
