History of Earth Day Savannah

Every Spring in April since 2000, Savannah has celebrated Earth Day.   It is a celebration of our community’s environmental responsibility towards living and conducting business in coastal Georgia.

Earth Day Savannah has served since 2000 as an important opportunity for local government, businesses, non-profits, and community groups to connect with the public and each other.

It is the City’s largest environmental outreach event of the year, and the largest educational Earth Day related event in Georgia!

In the heart of the historic district, the 30-acre Forsyth Park became the nucleus of the city’s green initiatives.

2021

Over 12 businesses and 35 environmental non-profits organizations collaborated for Savannah Chatham Sustainability Coalition’s campaign to Make Earth Day Every Day throughout the entire month of April!

Over 60 events [+20 virtual +40 in person] were held as a result of our new online calendar including nine community engagement art pop ups.

This month-long celebration, which included an online calendar of events, was a successful, safe way for businesses and environmental nonprofits to connect with the public and strengthen the environmental network in our community.

December 2021: The city officially committed to being green on Tuesday, adopting the 100% Savannah Clean Energy Plan, which aims to achieve 100% renewable electricity community-wide by 2035 and 100% renewable energy for all energy needs by 2050.

Council previously approved the 100% Clean Energy Resolution needed to develop the plan in March 2020, making Savannah the fifth city in the state to pledge to pursue a lower carbon future to fight climate change.

“From a pledge to a plan, we got it done and thank you for all of your help,” Alderman Nick Palumbo said in acknowledging several Savannah residents who served on various development groups.

The final plan as adopted this week includes 45 strategies that fall into five categories: energy efficiency; renewable energy; transportation and mobility; community and economic development; and education and engagement.

Savannah City Council approved the 100% Clean Energy initiative.

The Sustainability Department kicked off the City’s 100% Savannah initiative in every corner of the City—East, South, and West.

We gathered in three communities with food, music, bounce houses, children’s activities, and lots of great information that will help you start where you are on the path to a cleaner and brighter future.
